Primary Purpose
Lead and support population health-based research that focuses on health outcomes, patterns of health determinants and policies and interventions that link these elements. Develop and conduct research aimed at understanding health disparities among different populations and how social determinants of health can be addressed in the delivery of healthcare. Work collaboratively with a variety of departments and partner institutions. Disseminate findings through publications and presentations. 

Minimum Specifications
 

Education

  • Must have a Master’s Degree in Clinical/Research Epidemiology, Health Services Research or related field with an emphasis in epidemiology research design and analysis.
  • Ph.D. preferred.
     

Experience

  • Must have a minimum of two year of applied public health/epidemiologic research projects. Five years of experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to design, conduct and evaluate epidemiologic and public health projects.
  • Authorship and/or co-authorship of published research articles in peer reviewed academic or healthcare-oriented journals preferred.
  • Experience in a large hospital system or public health entity preferred.
  • Experience with submitting and/or conducting grant-funded research preferred.

Skills or Special Abilities

  • Must demonstrate strong knowledge of research and analytic techniques in the field of epidemiologic and health outcomes research. Must demonstrate familiarity and/or strong interest in research focused on health equity and social determinants of health.
  • Must demonstrate knowledge of program and population evaluation methods, statistical analyses, research design, data collection and management and medical writing.
  • Must have the ability to direct the mining of data from a variety of clinical information systems, and understand and reconcile disparate data.
  • Must have general knowledge of electronic medical record systems, familiarity with methods for developing research databases and methods for summarizing data in reports.
  • Must be able to demonstrate a high skill level in the use of statistical software (be able to use/program in R, STATA/SPSS or SAS).
  • Must have the ability to work independently and execute multiple assignments with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to work in a deadline-driven environment, handling and prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Must have excellent people skills (thoughtful, empathetic and articulate), the ability to build collaborative relationships. Must be able to interact effectively with a variety of clinical and research personnel, peers, and medical staff in a team environment.
  • Must have excellent oral and written communication skills and the interest in providing consultation and coaching.
  • Must have a working knowledge of Windows-based systems, including MS Office Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook software.
  • Must be a self-directed quick learner.
     

Responsibilities

  1. Responsible for initiating, supervising and contributing to research in population health, health disparities, health outcomes, impact of healthcare delivery methods, health innovation, program evaluation and other priority areas outlined in Parkland’s Strategic Plan.
  2. Serves as an advisor, coach and instructor for epidemiologic research study designs, methods, analyses. Provides consultation to a variety of different clinical departments and stakeholders.
  3. Works collaboratively across departments and entities that have expertise and access to data that is relevant to the aims of the research.
  4. Serves on various Parkland committees and workgroups as requested or as required to provide expertise in epidemiologic methods and findings, application of research into operational initiatives, population-based research design and project fulfillment.
  5. Compiles, Interprets and presents findings to multiple hospital and physician groups.
  6. Develops and supports publications/presentations of research findings. Performs medical writing and editing.
  7. Identifies potential funding sources to support research efforts and participates in the preparation of grant applications.

Job Accountabilities

  1. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
  2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
