FT Nights: 10:00 pm - 6:00 am, Monday - Friday and QOWE with rotating holidays, 40 hours per week

What You Will Do:

Work under general supervision and close supervision of the Laboratory Manager. Perform blood procurement procedures by various techniques such as phlebotomy and capillary puncture on patients of all age groups. Perform bleeding time tests and blood culture collections. May, under close supervision, perform simple laboratory procedures, having well-defined criteria and quality control limits.

  • Essential Functions
    • Using aseptic technique, collect blood specimens by venipuncture or capillary puncture without undue mental or physical stress on patients of all ages. When procuring blood, communicate courteously and effectively with patients’ families, caretakers, and visitors. Collect nasal swabs from the Anterior Nares for Influenza and MRSA (Methecillin Resistant Staph. Aureus) testing.
    • Adhere accurately to established procedures when procuring blood specimens, so that patients will not have to be redrawn unnecessarily. Participate as a contributing member of the laboratory team toward the efficient and effective processing of total laboratory workload.
    • Using defined procedures, properly document and deliver laboratory specimens from patients of all ages (i.e. blood, urine, feces, body fluids, etc.) to the appropriate laboratory section on a timely basis in order to expedite T.A.T.’s that are satisfactory to the physician customer.
    • Maintain positive professional relationships with customers, Hospital staff and Laboratory employees through courteous, efficient and appropriate verbal and written communication. Answer the intercom and telephone in a friendly, courteous manner. Comply with Ascension guidelines of conduct and job performance.
  • Non-Essential Functions
    • Maintain supplies, restock pick-up trays, pick-up carts and storage areas. Assure the cleanliness of the specimen procurement areas and equipment by following established aseptic protocols and safety guidelines.
    • May, when assigned and under supervision, perform simple laboratory procedures which have well-defined criteria and quality control limits. These assignments will enhance efficiency of processing Laboratory workload. a) May, when assigned to work in the Microbiology section, under supervision, prepare media, maintain stock and perform inoculations of culture specimens.
    • Maintain awareness of need for team spirit at all times.
    • This position shall have access to and disclose personal health information only when reasonably necessary to perform the designated job-related responsibilities. Disclosure and/or use of personal health information for any purpose other than as reasonably necessary for designated job responsibilities is prohibited.
    • This position requires the ability to identify age related differences within the persons served and the adjustment of treatment style and expectations as appropriate, including adjustments based on the person’s served cognitive function and learning ability. This will include taking into account their religious and cultural needs and preferences.
What You Will Need:

Education:

  • General basic knowledge normally acquired through completion of a high school education required.

Work Experience:

  • Previous experience in performance of venipuncture and capillary puncture is preferred.
