The Clinical Laboratory Assistant Team Leader is responsible for coordinating and monitoring activities of clinical laboratory assistants and phlebotomists; assists Director/Manager in activities that may include scheduling, work allocation, interviewing, orientation and training, evaluating performance; making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivating clinical laboratory assistants and phlebotomists to achieve peak performance; performing phlebotomy and point-of care testing as designated; answering telephones and verbal reporting of verified test results; performing clerical tasks; participating in appropriate continuing education; performing work in compliance with laboratory policies and procedures. Orientates and trains new pathology-processing staff. Develops and maintains initial and on-going competency for the pathology-processing staff. Performs quality control, and maintains testing equipment for bleeding times and sweat chloride collections. Coordinates phlebotomy product evaluations.
 
What you will do in this role:
  • Assists in coordinating and monitoring activities of phlebotomists and clinical laboratory assistants; assists Director/Manager in activities that may include scheduling, work allocation, interviewing, orientation and training, evaluating performance; making recommendations for personnel actions, and motivating phlebotomists and clinical laboratory assistants to achieve peak performance.
  • Demonstrates pro-active problem solving skills to include identifying a problem and recommend appropriate action; communicates necessary information to Supervisor or Manager. Acts as a resource to customers, both within and outside the department. Accepts responsibility for own development to include cross-training in other functions to ensure satisfactory operation of the department or to permit flexible staffing assignments.
  • Answers telephone and verbally reports verified test results. Performs patient registration, processes patient reports, and performs other assigned clerical duties such as: filing, printing, faxing.
  • Performs bleeding times, sweat chloride collections, venipuncture and fingerstick specimen collection on neonate, infant, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, collection is timely; patient experience minimal discomfort; observes standards for dual patient identification. Cross-trained to process specimens and send specimens to referral laboratories.
  • Trains, plans and coordinates various training programs including: performing bleeding times, venipuncture, blood culture collects, finger and heel stick specimen collection on neonate, infant, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients; computer functions, client registration, print and process patient reports, point-of-care testing, I-STAT, collection of sweat chloride samples, type checks, and Unopette platelet collection (as appropriate per facility). Develops skills check lists, competencies and various training programs under manager’s guidance. Trains new staff in proper AIDET.
  • Performs a range of administrative functions that includes data collection and reporting related to staff education, safety and patient satisfaction. Maintains files for laboratory competency program.

Qualifications

A high school diploma or equivalent and two years of phlebotomy experience are required for this role. Neonatal, infant, and pediatric specimen collection experience preferred in addition to expertise in adolescent, adult, and geriatric collections.
