Parkland Health’s Enterprise Data Services team consists of 30 full-time employees who deliver business intelligence solutions and administer our BI applications. We support enterprise requests for data services, which can range from regulatory data submissions and management (e.g., 1115 Waiver) to producing tools that provide Parkland-wide insights (e.g., the COVID Dashboard). We also support and enable ~25 distributed analytics teams (Centers of Excellence, or COEs) across Parkland to support data stakeholder subsets with processes and guidance for effective and efficient data delivery (e.g., HIM, Decision Support, Community Health Analytics).

EDS Strategy

Enabling the organization to serve trustworthy data through a shared IT platform that provides reusable data assets & HIPAA/HITRUST compliant industry best practice processes for delivery and maintenance.  A literacy program that enables the organization to utilize the platform and its assets.  An organizational agreement to prioritize our limited resources and derive the highest value from our data with a focus on data quality and master data management.

 

Projects

Depending on experience and interest, we have many potential projects to embed our intern.

  • BI Developer: Assists with developing and modifying analytics and data deliverables in order to optimize effective evidence-based decision making at Parkland. Experience reading and writing SQL and a functional understanding of relational databases are necessary.
    • Provide value for Parkland by onboarding to our tools and processes and developing low-complexity reports within the first 4 weeks. Continue to shadow and learn from our team to take on modifications of more complex reports and the primary development of urgent ad-hoc requests.
    • This role includes onboarding time to ensure access to and familiarity with our department's tools and processes. Duties include reading/writing SQL queries, designing GUI or tabular reports, validating datasets, communicating with data requestors and other IT teams, and identifying ways to improve.
  • BI Project Manager: Assists with developing/modifying data information and presentation solutions in order to provide Parkland with effective evidence-based decision making. Serves as liaison between development team and operational data requestors. Must be detail-oriented and organized with a CX mindset. 
    • Provide value for Parkland by onboarding to our tools and processes and owning report documentation for straightforward requests within four weeks. Continue to shadow and learn from our team to take on more complex documentation, customer follow-up and validation work.

    • This role includes onboarding time to ensure access to and familiarity with our department's tools and processes. Duties include understanding operational data requests to determine the right tools, mapping requested data to database tables, following up with requestors, and documenting definitions.
  • BI System Administrator: Responsible for maintaining the information systems within the Enterprise Data Services department in order to provide Parkland with secure, dependable, and accurate data. This includes data transfer, data integrity, and data storage responsibilities, and requires SQL and ETL experience.
    • Gain basic understanding of administrator tasks through onboarding and self-directed learning within the first month of work. Is able to take on ownership of low-complexity tasks while learning to respond to issues and ad-hoc requests. Increases competencies throughout internship.
    • Demonstrate critical thinking and attention to detail through support of routine BI admin activities (e.g., publishing reports, running updates, etc.) and through increased responsibility for troubleshooting, documenting best practices, communicating with stakeholders, and planning for maintenance.
      • Learn the basic administration tasks for EDS systems (Epic Cogito, SAP, etc.)
      • Support the EDS team by taking on low complexity keep-the-lights-on tasks
      • Stretch expertise gained by reviewing and improving documentation for planned and unplanned admin tasks for each system.

 

 

Requirements

  • MS Office proficiency
  • Coursework in math, logic, computer science, or engineering required (level of experience will impact which projects align to experience)
  • Coursework in business or communications preferred
