Overview

Under the direction of the Health Services Administrator (HSA), Program Manager (PM), or higher licensed medical professional, the Competency Trainer is an education specialist who is primarily responsible for the educational and training component of the competency program. The Competency Trainer will utilize several cognitive remedial or restructuring techniques to teach basic legal concepts, as well as, helping the persons served understand his/her own legal situation in compliance with all applicable standards, state and federal rules and regulations.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school and specialized training for licensing/certification(s)

Experience:
  • One or more year of experience in a correctional/detention facility

Licenses/Certifications
  • Certification in Correctional Competency Training within 6 months of eligibility
  • Current (and must maintain) lifesaving ACLS certification through AHA
  • Current (and must maintain) lifesaving BLS certification through AHA
Responsibilities

  1. Provide training, learning and education in a multimodal format, utilizing discussions, reading, video, and role-playing in a group treatment setting with approximately 10-12 mentally ill persons served.
  2. Facilitate individual (1:1) training sessions/ meetings with mentally ill persons served to review their specific case and provide tutoring relevant to his/ her case.
  3. Facilitate experiential methods such as "mock trial" exercises for the persons served with the involvement of the treatment team
  4. Educational components for the program include but are not limited to: Charges, severity of charges, sentencing, pleas, plea bargaining, roles of courtroom personnel, adversarial nature of the trial process, evaluating evidence, etc.
  5. Additional remedial and simplified cognitive techniques are also provided with specific cognitive or knowledge deficits
  6. Chart all findings in persons served record providing written summaries of history and treatment course or other documentation requirements as outlined by the company and facility
  7. May assist in the job shadow portion of the interview process of potential staff
  8. May assist in orientation and training of new employees
  9. Perform other duties as assigned.
