Job Description

The Complex Behavioral Care Assistant (CNA) performs various resident care activities and related nonprofessional services essential to caring for personal needs and comfort of complex behavioral residents in a locked unit. Rate: $20/hr + benefits

Job Responsibilities: 

1 Handles and serves residents in a manner conducive to their safety and comfort, adhering to instructions issued by the nursing supervisor and or charge nurse to establish shift routines;

2 Performs duties in accordance with established methods and techniques and in conformance with recognized standards;

3 Provides maximum resident care services within limits defined by delegated tasks;

4 Assumes responsibility for varied resident care duties as assigned by charge nurse to include admitting, discharging, transferring and caring for the resident’s personal belongings and assisting the professional nurse in performing resident treatments;

5 Bathes the resident in bed, tub or shower, combs hair, cleans and cuts fingernails and gives shampoos;

6 Makes both occupied and unoccupied beds;

7 Positions residents in correct body alignment in and out of bed and applies safety measures under the direction of the charge nurse;

8 Assists the residents in and out of bed, in walking and transports residents throughout a facility via wheelchair, reclining chair, or stretcher; may accompany residents when transported outside the facility for appointments;

9 Coordinates scheduling for residents requiring O.T., P.T., S.T., to assure that they are available for the therapist on a timely basis;

10 Verifies that all residents have wrist bands and door tags;

11 Accompanies residents when transported outside facility for appointments as needed;

12 Assists the charge nurse during the resident admission assessment;

13 Participates in the formulation and follow through of the resident’s nursing and behavioral care plan;

14 Takes and records weights, blood pressures, temperatures, pulse and respiration;

15 Gives various skin care treatments;

16 Applies simple clean dressings, slings, stockings, and support bandages, under direction of the licensed nurse;

17 Feeds residents, assists all residents with their meals and provides in between meal nourishment, as well as providing fresh ice and water to the resident’s bedside;

18 Completes record of resident’s oral intake and output;

19 Answers resident’s call light or bell, delivers messages, administers bedpans and urinals, cleans areas of spillage or accidents caused by the resident;

20 Performs isolation care as needed for resident’s condition;

21 Participates in the orientation of new complex behavioral care assistants;

22 Provides direct care to the more acutely ill and mentally ill residents on the nursing unit;

23 Reports any/all changes in resident’s condition, any family concerns and resident’s complaints to charge nurse and/or supervisor;

24 Collects and bags soiled linen and delivers to dirty linen area; if assigned, washes and dries items in domestic washer/drier;

25 Obtains clean linens and supplies from supply areas as directed, cleans utility rooms, kitchen areas and all other nursing areas, as assigned;

26 Cleans and sterilizes resident equipment;

27 Receives and escorts visitors, collects, charts, records and reports;

28 Transfers resident’s belongings and equipment as directed, and assists with postmortem care;

29 Ensures that residents and families receive the highest quality of service in a caring and compassionate atmosphere which recognizes the individuals’ needs and rights;

30 Assists with treatments and vitals, as necessary;

31 Appropriately manage resident’s behavior and guide resident towards more acceptable social behaviors

32 Assists each resident to achieve and maintain an optimum level of function and self-care through education and retraining in the activities of daily living.

33 Implement positive and appropriate behavioral interventions.

34 Participate and provide input into resident’s plan of care and ensure interventions are followed. 

35 Outdoor supervision of recreational activities and smoking safety.

36 Complete daily behavioral documentation for each resident assigned.

37 Performs other duties as requested.

Job Requirements:

1 A minimum of a high school education or high school equivalency diploma is preferred for this position.

2 Must be a Certified Nurse Aide

3 It is mandatory that the candidate is able to read, write and understand the English language.

4 In addition, a Certified Nurse Aide is required to attend a minimum of 12 hours continuing education programs provided by the facility in order to maintain certification.

5 A certified nurse aide must have successfully completed a state approved certified nursing assistant program.

6 Training and certification in Crisis Prevention Intervention and the ability to demonstrate advanced behavioral techniques.

7 Experience in working with complex and/or severe behavioral residents and applying therapeutic techniques to deescalate the resident.

8 Ability to recognize escalating aggressive behaviors and providing calm redirection to a controlled, safe environment..

9 Ability to work with mentally ill residents having special needs and/or aggressive behaviors

10 Knowledge of behavioral interventions and applied behavioral analysis.

11 Knowledge of behavior management strategies and techniques related to residents experiencing behavioral difficulties.

12 Knowledge of aggressive behavior characteristics pertaining to mentally ill residents.

13 Minimum experience working with behavioral residents preferred: 3 years.
