The Position:

The Director of Consumer Banking Strategy and Planning is a high profile position reporting directly to the EVP, President of Discover’s Consumer Bank (CB). This person will serve as the Chief of Staff and key advisor for the EVP with a broad array of day-to-day and special project responsibilities. The role’s day-to-day responsibilities include managing five direct reports and roughly 15 FTE to: manage and interpret Finance-provided data on Division performance; guide strategy development teams in addressing pressing business issues, and manage CB engagement activities. The successful candidate will also be asked to provide logistical support and thought leadership for many of the activities intended to set strategic direction and maintain alignment within CB (e.g., managing weekly Senior Operations staff meetings, participating in business unit scorecard and process reviews, organizing and conducting periodic strategy sessions for CB officers and directors, and coordinating the creation of Executive Committee and Board-level presentations).

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage a team of strategic analysts in interpreting Finance-provided data to help monitor and optimize business unit-level performance (includes tracking performance against key expense, headcount, and discretionary spend targets)

  • Provide overall direction, prioritization, and thought leadership of two teams of strategic analysts tasked with addressing pressing analytical issues facing CB

  • Oversee the Employee Strategy and Engagement team delivering against major initiatives for CB (e.g. on-campus recruiting for MBA’s and undergraduates, Strategic Leadership and Operations Leadership Programs, Employee Opinion Survey, CB coordination for Discover Innovation, etc.)

  • Serve as the CB point person for various corporate initiatives (e.g., Business Continuity Planning, Procurement Task Force, Information Security, Facilities, etc.)

  • Serve as a thought partner to the business unit heads in CB to address pressing business issues

  • Support the EVP in preparing periodic presentations (e.g., DFS Board, Discover Bank Board, Executive Committee, Rating Agency, CB Quarterly Meeting, etc.)

Qualifications:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in an analytically-oriented operations environment, a strategy consulting firm, or a financial/strategic planning function

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Superior written and verbal communication skills

  • Demonstrated strength in issue identification, directing and performing quantitative analysis, and effectively synthesizing complex data into key insights

  • Significant experience interacting with, presenting to, and influencing senior management audiences

  • The proven ability to apply a general management mindset to a complex operating environment

  • Ability to structure work and provide direction to teams consisting of analysts with diverse skill sets

  • Demonstrated ability to drive action with both direct reports and those over whom he/she has informal or no authority

  • Ability to apply an entrepreneurial mindset and adjust quickly to changing direction and tight deadlines

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software: Excel, PowerPoint, and Word

  • Experience in the Consumer Financial Services industry preferred
