Each position in the Engineering Technologist job family is responsible to the assigned supervisor to perform intermediate level work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering technology knowledge in a safe, cost-effective and efficient way.

Technical Proficiency: Demonstrates an intermediate level ability to perform with minimal guidance a variety of non-routine technical assignments of a complex nature. Exhibits ability to understand interrelationship between systems and component equipment in area of assignment.

Leadership & Guidance: Leads, facilitates, and coordinates work activities of others within the work group, team, department or other corporate entity as necessary to perform all routine engineering technology effort. Ensures all work activities are performed in accordance with the policies, practices, standards, and rules of the company.

Planning & Organization Ability: Organizes and conducts planning meetings covering scheduling, operations, and maintenance of equipment with applicable company and contract personnel. Review trends of material and equipment performance and initiate necessary corrective action.

Problem Solving & Initiative: Works independently in identifying and resolving complex problems. Seeks to broaden knowledge in areas of the company and industry which will complement acquired technical expertise.

Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Develops, reviews or prepares technical reports clearly, concisely and effectively. Leads and facilitates meetings effectively. Functions as a team leader and member. Networks with peers inside and outside the AEP System. Identifies key stakeholders. Uses informal network to get things done.

Decision Making & Business Awareness: Uses diverse approaches to make decisions in the absence of a definite framework or where few precedents exist. Demonstrates the ability to handle conflicting interests related to approaches on projects or studies; also demonstrates the ability to analyze options and risks. Makes decisions which may affect the operations or results of the department and which may have some impact on the business unit. Exhibits an awareness of AEP's competitive position and how business decisions impact their organizational unit. Understands the specific goals and objectives of their individual organizational unit and directly contributes to achieving them. Refer to attached matrix for required qualifications.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • As requested, assist and collaboratively work with Asset Reliability groups to help ensure all mis-operations are fully investigated and resolved within the proper period of time to maintain compliance.
  • Create End to End Testing Files and collaboratively work with field personnel to insure the integrity and reliability of the protection and control schemes throughout the AEP footprint. Provide P&C Technical Support for all P&C related equipment including all types of electromechanical and microprocessor based relays, SCADA, and RTU’s .
  • Work collaboratively with the TFS operations groups to assist in abnormal conditions remediation.
  • Design small engineering projects for relay and other equipment failures and rehab replacements.
  • Develop and lead Rehabilitation projects on a as needed basis
  • Serve as liaisons between the field  and Protection and Control Engineering
  • Provide support to major storms events or equipment failures including transformers, CB’s relays,  SCADA or RTU’s.
  • Develop and provide the necessary mobile protection settings for mobile installation for scheduled work or emergency failures.
  • Assist Transmission Field Services, Station Technical service in the installation of Transformer monitoring equipment.
  • Work collaboratively with planning, Project Management, and the Capital construction groups to provide input and scoping of projects.
  • Work collaboratively with the Transmission Field Services Policy Procedures & Standards group to develop or revise Protection & Control Policies and Procedures.
  • Work collaboratively and cohesively with the Transmission Field Services, Policy Procedures & Standards group and the TFS operations and construction groups to assist with the implementation, training, guidance and adherence to all standard practices and procedures.
  • Work with the TFS PP&S Group, the TFS Operations Personnel, PCE and  the Transmission Operations Group to resolve and properly mitigate all reoccurring system alarms.
  • Assist in the screening of contract Protection and Control technicians for work on AEP Projects
  • Work with the Performance Management Group Technical Services Core Responsibilities,  TFS Safety, Transmission Procurement, and AEP Legal Group to insure all P&C contracts have pertinent data and information for working on AEP Projects.



 

Requirements

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering in a program accredited by ABET will also be considered.

Has typically acquired 2 or more years of related experience in work activities and projects requiring the application of engineering technology principles; Bachelor's degree in engineering technology* in a program accredited by ABET**.

*A degree in engineering technology is the preferred degree: however, engineering degrees will also be considered.
**ABET - Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology. Acceptable alternatives are (1) a Bachelor's degree in engineering technology (non-ABET), plus a Professional Engineers (PE) license in any state of the U.S. or (2) a Bachelor's degree in engineering technology (non-ABET) plus a Master's degree or PhD in engineering technology from a university with an ABET accredited Bachelor's program.

Preferred Knowledge / Experience: 
  • GE URPC relays or other GE IED type relays.
  • SEL IED relays or microprocessor based relaying applications. 
  • Thorough knowledge of older electromechanical relays and associated protection schemes and philosophies. 
  • Working knowledge or first-hand experience with Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) or Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs).
  • Working knowledge of Power Line Carrier or other Pilot Protection Schemes. 

Additional Information: 

Depending upon assignment, position may entail some travel and exposure to situations which require knowledge, understanding and adherence to applicable safety procedures. 

May require extended hours to accomplish assigned tasks to meet requirements and schedules.

Physical demand level is Sedentary more
