This position will manage EHS programs in support of the College’s academic and business objectives. Occupational health and safety laws, environmental federal and state regulations and good practices will be reflected in program management and in providing technical advice to the College community. The EHS team are “generalists” so will be involved in various EHS related programs. Specific program areas this position will be responsible for are hazardous waste management, hazardous materials in building materials, construction safety, and emergency response. Will keep abreast of pertinent EHS regulations, developments and best practices.
Position Responsibilities:
- Oversee the management of and proper disposal of hazardous waste/materials on campus.
- Support Project Managers on construction/renovation projects relative to OSHA construction standards and other applicable rules and regulations. Includes some OSHA general industry standards (confined space, lockout/tagout, electrical). Will conduct/coordinate regular inspections. Follow-up with reports and corrective action as needed.
- Respond to incidents on campus, to include emergency response to hazmat releases. Will work to bring incidents to a successful conclusion. Manage spill kits and related equipment.
- Coordinate and provide training to the College community.
- Serves on duty phone for FM&P
- Other duties as assigned.
- Supervisory Responsbilities:
- This position may oversee student workers, and consultants.
Education Required:
- Minimum of a Bachelors degree in EHS related discipline.
- OSHA 10 or 30 hour training in Construction and or General Industry.
- OSHA Hazwoper trained at the level to respond, assess, notify and secure the area.
- RCRA Hazardous Waste and DOT HazMat training.
- All training will be maintained as required.
Experience Required:
- 1-3 years experience in related field. General knowledge of EHS in Higher Education (or similar); working knowledge of federal, state regulations and industry consensus standards.
- Experience in specific EHS programs cited and in the recognition, evaluation and control of hazardous materials, situations and conditions.
Skills and Abilities Required:
- Excellent communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
- Able to prepare concise and accurate reports, permits and applications.
- Can exercise independent judgment and discretion in managing College policy, standards, and guidelines.
- Can think and react calmly and effectively under emergency situations.
- Good working knowledge of applicable EHS regulations and how to apply them to the College.
- Exhibits good teamwork: is approachable, cooperative, and contributes to an overall positive and productive work/team environment.
- Pays attention to detail, has good organizational skills, can work with a diverse population, and is able to work independently.
- Has a valid drivers license.
Performance Profile:
- Zero to minimal incidents to include compliance with federal, state, local and College standards/regulations
- Successful interactions with the college community and regulators
- Manage risk to an acceptable level
- Prioritize tasks and projects to ensure deadlines and priorities are met. Effective management of workload on a regular basis.
- Programs aligned with regulatory requirements, industry standards and peers.
Other:
- To participate in job specific trainings, able to move up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis, able to don personal protective equipment, available for emergency response.
