Job Description

Dialysis LPNs have a wide range of responsibilities, which can include:

  • Monitoring patients throughout treatment, recording vital signs such as blood pressure and pulse rate, and responding to any alarms that may indicate a problem with the patient’s condition
  • Performing lab tests on patients’ blood samples to monitor their health and identify any problems
  • Preparing patients for dialysis treatment by cleaning the treatment area and equipment, ensuring that the patient is comfortable, and setting up machines for dialysis treatments
  • Administering medications or nutrients through an IV to patients who cannot swallow them
  • Recording medical observations and results of tests during dialysis treatments
  • Preparing patients for hemodialysis by cleaning their arm veins with antiseptic solutions and inserting needles into the veins to allow blood flow into the machine
  • Preparing patients for peritoneal dialysis by cleaning their abdomens, stomachs, or chests with antiseptic solution and inserting catheters into surgically created access sites near the ribs or spine
  • Educating patients about their condition and treatment plan, providing emotional support to patients and family members during difficult times, and assisting patients with activities of daily living such as bathing or using the restroom
  • Changing bandages on wounds or cleaning catheter
Qualifications:
  • Associate degree or diploma in nursing
  • Must complete a course of study that includes anatomy, physiology, microbiology, pharmacology, medical terminology, nursing, psychology
  • Displays excellent organizational skills and is very detail oriented.
  • Possesses strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Has good active listening abilities.
