Primary Purpose

Performs universal hearing screens on all newborn babies, as mandated by state law, and documents results of tests as appropriate.

Education

• None

Experience

• Must have three (3) years of healthcare experience to include one year of related clerical experience.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

• Prefer to have a current Heartsaver CPR course completion card within 90 days of hire and/or placement in job from one of the following:

• American Heart Association

• American Red Cross Rescuer

• Military Training Network.

• Must be able to demonstrate ability to use independent judgement in resolving issues within established guidelines.

• Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, visitors and hospital staff.

• Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of a PC.

• Must be able to demonstrate use of required software.

• Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient-valued behaviors.

Responsibilities

1. Performs universal hearing screens on all newborn babies to ensure PHHS is in compliance with state laws and regulations. Re-screens babies at 24 hours of age if the initial test is failed. Notifies Audiologist at UTSW/CMC if baby fails second test to ensure proper treatment.

2. Utilizes EPIC to determine census, prioritize babies for screening and document all hearing screening results.

3. Checks Newborn Nursery (NBN) and post-partum area charts on a daily basis to ensure proper hearing screening paperwork has been completed on every baby as part of the quality assurance process.

4. Assists Audiologists when repeat hearing screens are performed.

5. Transports babies to the NBN for Audiology, as necessary, ensuring that proper identification protocols are utilized.

6. Ensures stock is available on the ALGO 3e carts and restocks, as necessary. Notifies NBN supply coordinator when supplies need to be ordered to ensure a par level of stock is maintained at all times.

7. Performs weekly equipment checks (QM) on the ALGO 3e Color screeners to ensure equipment is in proper working order.

8. Assists with special assignments, as assigned.

9. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of medicine and healthcare for the assigned patient population by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and maintaining licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.

10. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

11. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines, that impact medicine and healthcare. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.

Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
