Job Description

KSDK 5 On Your Side (NBC, St. Louis - Market 23) seeks to hire a creative, curious investigative producer with strong news judgment for its award-winning news team.

Our mission is to identify stories important to the St. Louis community and shine a light on misinformation by analyzing data from government and other sources. We're looking for a journalist who is highly motivated and organized with exceptional data, researching, reporting and writing skills.

No television experience required, but the successful candidate will have mastered computer-assisted reporting techniques. You will be expected to collaborate with other members of our special projects unit to generate original, innovative, and high-impact stories that affect a large, diverse audience for television and online. You will also serve as the lead producer of our distinctive "Verify" franchise, which investigates viral social media claims about local news and events, debunking misinformation and disinformation.

Responsibilities:

  • Obtain and analyze data sets to identify and generate original stories
  • Collaborate with our investigative reporters and newsroom by researching topics
  • Understand and analyze complex information, finding stories in the data
  • Use fact-checking tools and resources like reverse image searching
  • Locate archived versions of previously deleted or altered material online
  • Find evidence of specific posts, images, or people on social media
  • Identify trends in discussion topics and community concerns on social media
  • Author web content
  • Conduct interviews
  • Other duties, as assigned


Requirements:

  • Proven ability to turn data into compelling and creative visual stories
  • 3 years' experience producing multi-platform stories using computer-assisted reporting (CAR) techniques
  • Experience with LexisNexis, content management systems
  • Knowledge of GIS software and data for analysis and mapping visualizations
  • Experience with interactive visualizations, embeds, and graphics for the web
  • Experience with or willingness to learn Microsoft suite team collaboration products
  • Familiarity with public databases, investigative search engines and FOIA procedures
  • Ability to identify teasable, audience-focused stories within complicated data sets
  • Knowledge of libel, copyright, FCC regulations, state & local privacy laws
  • Ability to juggle multiple short-term and long-term projects simultaneously
  • College degree in a field related to the required skills
  • Understanding of the tenets of journalism
  • Excellent writing skills, spelling and grammar
  • Knowledge of ENPS, Edius, and Axis graphics, a plus
  • Knowledge of multi-platform news gathering tools and resources including digital media
  • Reason to live in St. Louis and/or familiarity with the region, strongly preferred
  • Travel: Rarely: less than 10%
