Job Summary

The Lead Orthopedic Surgical Assist role will provide insight and support, further aligning leadership to support operations and providers in the care of patients. Provide daily and ongoing leadership for all departmental functions, including planning, escalated situations, and acting as direct supervisor in the absence of leadership.

Provide assistance for the coordination of staff scheduling and work flows, program implementation and performance improvement activities. Will perform as a clinical resource to clinical and administrative staff and assists in the orientation/mentoring of employees. Assists under the direction of the operating surgeon with intra-operative homeostasis, exposure, closure, administration of medications, etc. May perform skin closure under direction without need for direct observation after validation of competency by surgeon. Develops specialized preoperative plans in coordination with appropriate surgeons and health team members. Assists the surgical technician in preparation of surgical tools and equipment, and takes preventative measures to ensure applicable health and safety regulations are satisfied. Assists the surgical team in draping the patient and maintaining the sterile field. Functions under the direction of the surgeon during the intraoperative portion of practice, as well as within the clinical practice setting. Must demonstrate knowledge of surgical anatomy/physiology and operative technique, possess the ability to apply principles of asepsis/infection control, recognize safety hazards, and initiate appropriate corrective action. Additional duties as delegated by the surgeon in cooperation with local and state policy.

Ensures all surgical workflows and related standards, policies, protocols and quality requirements are met. Exhibits flexibility with acceptance of variable work schedules/assignments. Participates in activities to promote the department and Sanford Health. Performs other related duties as requested by leadership.

Assists with monitoring of appropriate indicators for quality and continuous improvement. Will collaborate with leadership on issues pertaining to department growth, teambuilding and maintaining the budget. Must demonstrate support of the mission, vision and values of the organization. Expected to contribute to the strategic planning, day-to-day operations and attainment of the strategic initiatives of the organization.

May be asked to oversee productivity as well as delegate to assistants, clinical staff and students as they provide patient care, treatment or other services. Follows and adheres to accepted clinical practice guidelines of professional organization.

Functions within the scopes and standards of nursing practice as outlined in the Nurse Practice Act and Administrative Rules in state of practice and licensure. The Sanford Professional Nursing Practice recognizes the Scope and Standards of Practice and the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements as published by the American Nurses Association as the foundation of nursing care delivery and professional conduct.

Qualifications

Graduate from a nationally accredited nursing program preferred, including, but not limited to, Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN), and National League for Nursing Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation (NLN CNEA). Bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred.

Two years as a Registered Nurse (RN) experience required.

Currently holds an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.

Certification in perioperative nursing (CNOR) within one year of meeting certification eligibility requirements is preferred.
