Position Summary:
The College of Osteopathic Medicine is seeking a licensed mental health professional to provide counseling services and wellness promotion outreach programming for osteopathic medical students at the Michigan State University, Macomb University Center, and Detroit Medical Center campuses. The counselor will primarily work from MSU/East Lansing but may also provide therapeutic services and outreach activities to the other sites via a Zoom online platform. The position requires demonstration of multiculturally competent training and experience with individuals from diverse backgrounds including underrepresented and non-traditional students, LBGTA, veterans and international status. Responsibilities will entail a range of clinical services including, but not limited to, clinical intake assessments, individual and group counseling, and documentation of student therapeutic contacts. Further expectations include experience or interest in crisis management, mental health first aid, suicide prevention, mindfulness meditation training, and evidence-based treatment modalities such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and third wave behavioral therapies (e.g., ACT, DBT, MBSR, MBCT). Specific skills require strong evidence of verbal and written communication skills, ability to establish rapport with students, faculty and staff, and psychotherapy experience with the spectrum of mental health issues, including, but not limited to, depression, mood and anxiety disorders, complex trauma, sexual assault and relationship violence, acculturation and interpersonal difficulties, and neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD and learning disabilities. Other critical duties involve responding to daytime and afterhours student emergencies, CARE Team referrals and other emergent situations.
Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills
Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing one or two years of post- bachelor's degree work such as a Masters in Counseling, or Psychology; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in counseling in a clinic/agency environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The job also requires certification or licensing by the State of Michigan.
Desired Qualifications
Experience working collaboratively and effectively within team oriented, interprofessional settings in healthcare systems and/or higher education. Familiarity preferred with wellness promotion practices, medical student education and training, and osteopathic principles of holistic health.
