Job Summary and Qualifications

The Nurse Extern delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with the Nurse Extern’s skills/training and the needs of the Department, and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. The Nurse Extern is currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved.

What you will do in this role:

Documentation

After initial assessment may reassess and document findings. Documentation is reviewed and signed off by preceptor. Patient care is based on the nursing process in compliance with hospital policies and procedures. Participates in plan of care development and implementation base and understands the unique age specific needs.

Patient Rights

The Nurse Extern will work to support and protect the rights of each patient served, treats each patient with dignity and care, and maintains patient confidentiality/privacy.

Patient Safety

Demonstrates commitment to patient safety initiatives including patient fall prevention, National Patient Safety Goals, and reporting changes in condition or patient complaints to preceptor.

Patient/Family Education

Provides appropriate patient/family education, per department and hospital policy and procedures.

Age Specific Care:

This position requires of care for the age groups indicated. The staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical, psycho/social, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, or experience.

What qualifications you will need:

• Basic Cardiac Life Support
• High School Graduate / GED
• Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing 
• This position requires students to be in the last semester of their nursing program (ASN, BSN) , provide transcripts of coursework and be within 6 months of licensure.
