Overview

Our Nurse Trainer, under direct supervision, conducts pre-developed or routine nursing training programs for Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses and Mental Health Technicians to ensure they function in a competent and proficient manner and in accordance to facility and organizational expectations.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing school
  • BSN or MSN preferred

Experience:
  • Five (5) years relevant industry experience

Licenses/Certifications:
  • Registration with State Nursing Board where facility is located, or eligible for same through reciprocity arrangements
  • Specialty nursing certification preferred
Responsibilities

  1. Teaches clinical techniques for intervening with the mentally ill through the use of lecture and demonstration to enhance the patient care skills of staff nurses. Monitors, evaluates and provides technical assistance to staff nurses.
  2. Assists manager in developing, implementing, and evaluating hospital orientation programs.
  3. Serves as primary clinical instructor for nursing staff. Coordinates related administrative and program activities.
  4. Maintains current knowledge of nursing theories regarding care of the mentally ill. Has an up-to-date knowledge of regulatory and accreditation requirements.
  5. Demonstrates understanding of risk management program, clinical precautions, infection control, fall prevention, utilization of special procedures, environmental checks, fire disaster procedures, alternative to use of seclusion/restraint, and abuse reporting. Standard is met with achievement of mandatory requirements. Environment of care checks demonstrates clinic compliance.
  6. Assists in evaluating the effectiveness of training through the use of post-tests, observation and feedback.
  7. Updates training materials as indicated. Provides feedback to trainees as to testing results and provides follow-up training as appropriate.
  8. Completes assigned clinical audits/performance improvement activities as assigned by senior nursing leadership.
  9. May maintain necessary training paperwork to ensure staff has completed necessary training.
  10. Develops training calendars for the facility.
  11. Demonstrates knowledge of the age specific needs of patient treated in the program. Completes training annually and evaluation of contributions during in-service or staff meetings in which topic is discussed, demonstration of skills in the Mental Health setting.
  12. Continues professional development through in-service education, workshops, conferences and self-study necessary to maintain current knowledge applicable to the position. Compliance in all mandatory Human Resources requirements.
  13. Must be able to apply principles of critical thinking to a variety of practical and emergent situations and accurately follow standardized procedures that may call for deviations.
  14. Must be able to apply sound judgment beyond a specific set of instructions and apply knowledge to different factual situations.
  15. Must be alert at all times; pay close attention to details.
  16. Must be able to work under stress on a regular or continuous basis.
  17. Perform other duties as assigned.
