Overview

Effectively applies mental health expertise and clinical skills in providing Mental Health Services to patients or clients resulting in an optimal level of care and significant achievements in therapeutic outcomes.

Qualifications

Education for Psychologist:

  • PHD, PSYD
  • Must be Licensed in the State of Practice

Experience for Psychologist:
  • 2-5 years post-degree (and licensure) clinical experience required
  • Correctional mental health experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  1. Conducts intakes, evaluations, and /or assessments for patients referred by Security, Healthcare staff, and other Community sources.
  2. Conducts evaluations to assess the treatment needs of patients that request or desire mental health services within the jail setting.
  3. Identifies mental health symptoms, treatment needs, and makes appropriate recommendations to the healthcare unit and security staff regarding the direction or required level of care.
  4. Recommends special housing or special watch and/or observations to security based on clinical findings.
  5. Makes a referral to nursing services based on reported symptoms by the person served.
  6. Recommends medication evaluations to the MD when necessary. Coordinates closely with the Prescriber or Psychiatrist to ensure that patients requiring evaluation or re-evaluation for medication are seen in a timely manner and the Prescriber is aware of any information pertinent to the patient's clinical condition.
  7. Assists in the management of medications and is able to identify when a person served is at risk due to side effects.
  8. Recommends and conducts other non-pharmacological treatments such as Group or individual therapy, when appropriate.
  9. Provides consultation to security and healthcare staff regarding persons served behavior, safety concerns or other mental health concerns.
  10. Provides mental health crisis intervention for the entire facility.
  11. Provides suicide intervention and management of suicidal and high risk patients.
  12. Participates in the treatment programming and planning of the most problematic cases, follow up and monitoring of medication, and general psychological input.
  13. Attends regular treatment team multidisciplinary meetings, classification meetings, or other required administrative meetings.
  14. Participates in CQI and / or QA studies and group sessions.
  15. Works effectively with all staff including security, healthcare and administrative staff.
  16. Provides on-call services when not on-site.
  17. Provides staff training in relevant mental health issues such as signs and symptoms of mental illness, management of mentally ill persons served, crisis intervention and related topics.
  18. Documents services and encounters appropriately and accurately according to facility and company policies. Maintains required documentation throughout all encounters, provides accessibility of notes for staff by following filing policies, and ensures transfer of information by producing organized and legible notes.
  19. When applicable, initiates involuntary hospitalization for those patients who need to be transferred to outside Mental Health facilities. Generates appropriate paperwork relevant to the hospitalization.
  20. Provides services in compliance with Facility and Company Mental Health Policies and Procedures.
  21. Provides services in compliance with Facility and Company Safety Policies and Procedures.
  22. Perform other duties as assigned.
