POSITION: Regional Pharmacist
LOCATION: Remote - Extensive travel to correctional facilities in West Virginia required
SCHEDULE: Full Time Monday-Friday
REQUIREMENTS:
- Unrestricted WV Pharmacist license
- WV Consultant Pharmacist Certification
- 5+ years Pharmacist experience
POSITION SUMMARY:
- The Regional Pharmacist is a registered pharmacist with the state of West Virginia who will serve as the administrative and clinical lead in pharmacy management.
- Coordinates the clinical activity as it relates to pharmacy.
- Serves as a drug information and educational resource to medical staff, nursing staff and ancillary department personnel.
- Also serves as the consultant pharmacy for the state and will coordinate with the State Board of Pharmacy on all administrative and pharmacy inspection issues.
Consultant Responsibilities
- Maintain controlled substance license, consultant pharmacist license, and DEA license for each facility
- Inspect individual sites quarterly
- Responsible for wasting controlled substances at each facility
- Responsible for ensuring medications are stored properly and meeting all rules and regulations
- Assists site with medication storage and procurement
- Assists with movement of high-cost medication within contract to ensure utilization of dispensed medications
- Ensures adequately documenting medication receipt, storage and administration
- Liaison with the WV Board of Pharmacy regarding site inspection and adequate licensing
- Pharmacist will be present during site inspection by WV BOP
- Ensure that all licenses (State, DEA) at each facility are up to date and in good standing
- Ensure sites have current copies of licensing from each Pharmacy which supplies medications to the site
- Ensures that copies of licenses are maintained at Wexford Corporate office
- Ensures compliance with established procedures concerning quality control, security of controlled substances and disposal of hazardous waste.
- Ensures compliance with policies and procedures of the West Virginia Department of Corrections & Rehabilitation and Wexford Health Sources.
- Establishes and enforces policies, procedures, standards and objectives.
Pharmacist Operational Responsibilities
- Liaison between the pharmacy vendors and facilities
- Point of contact for pharmacy vendors
- Ensure that medications are received at the site in timely manner and resolve variances in medication delivery
- Resolve questions regarding medication administration or medication supplies needed from purchasing
- Contact pharmacy to ensure that certain medications are procured and dispensed/administered
- Liaison between Pharmacy vendors and Mental Health Vendor
- Ensure that medication issues that arise are adequately addressed, including
- Polypharmacy
- High-cost medication usage
- Ensure that medication issues that arise are adequately addressed, including
- Work with sites and corporate resources to resolve any Electronic Health Record related medication issues
- Point of contact for drug information inquiries and issues from medical staff
- Answer question from staff or problem solve issues that arise with regard to medication procurement, storage and administration
- Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.
- Participates in internal and external initiatives, relevant boards, task forces, committee meetings and other activities.
- Is a member of the Pharmacy and Therapeutic Committee and the Medical Services Advisory Committee
- Ongoing accountability for the continuous assessment, improvement, coordination and integration of the department services and standards of care into the pharmacy’s primary function.
Pharmacist Clinical Responsibilities
- Coordinates and manages clinical pharmacy activities region-wide. Assigns projects and monitors progress.
- Drug Utilization
- Review requests for high-cost medications and ensure the most cost-effective therapies are available
- Review non-formulary requests for medications
- Answers questions and provides information to physicians, nurses, and other health care professionals on the appropriate use of medications, drug interactions, side effects, dosage, storage, etc.
- Educate staff on clinical topics at the site level as well as across the contract
- Educate staff on current policies and procedures and help staff identify resources available to them
- Responsible for responding to all medication information inquiries
- Work directly with Wexford Corporate/Medical Staff
- Available to answer medication inquiries from medical providers at the site level
- Work with WV leadership staff to answer and resolve medication questions that arise or provide additional information
- Assists in training/teaching programs (Departmental, Medical, Nursing, Correctional Community).
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Licensing | Current, valid Pharmacist license in the State of West Virginia |
Certification | WV Consultant Pharmacist |
Experience | Five (5) years experience as a Pharmacist in a hospital, community, or correctional setting.

Education | Graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy. |
