Job Summary: The Nurse Extern delivers high quality, patient-centered care by performing a variety of delegated basic patient care services related to common nursing functions and activities of daily living. Under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with the Nurse Extern’s skills/training and the needs of the Department, and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment. The Nurse Extern is currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing and can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved.

Under the supervision of the registered nurse (RN), the Nurse Extern I assists the nursing staff in providing patient care in accordance with the Nurse Extern’s skills/training and the needs of the Department, and consistently assists the patient care team with maintaining a clean, well-organized, and safe patient care environment.  The Nurse Extern I is currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing, has completed the first semester of nursing basic coursework. As the Nurse Extern I progresses through the nursing program they can perform higher-level procedures once competency is achieved.

Facility Based Description:

West Hills Hospital & Medical Center is a full-service acute care facility located in West Hills, CA, in the Western San Fernando Valley. The 225-bed facility recently completed an $80-million expansion that includes a new Emergency Department, Intensive Care Unit, Outpatient Services Unit, Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory, and The Grossman Burn Center. HealthGrades (a leading independent health care rating company) announced that West Hills Hospital has received the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for 2011 & 2012, the Clinical Excellence Award for Critical Care for 2012. West Hills Hospital is also among the Top 100 Hospitals nationwide for Gastrointestinal and General Surgery. LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum: BLS, CNA certification with the state OR Fundamentals of Nursing Course at accredited school

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

Minimum:  Currently enrolled and in good standing in an accredited school of nursing.

Preferred: 1+ years of nursing school completed.
