Overview:

 

Performs direct patient care in all aspects of respiratory therapy according to physicians' orders. Consults physicians on effectiveness of therapy. Provides ventilator support during cardiopulmonary resuscitation and maintains life support equipment. Performs duties and responsibilities in a manner consistent with our mission, values, and Mercy Service Standards.

 

Safety/Risk Management

a. Adheres to critical aspects of the counting policy, including, but not limited to:

- Inventory

- Narcotics

b. Follows all policies/procedures for Incident Report/Sentinel Events.

c. Follows all confidentiality policies/procedures.

d. Complies with infection control guidelines.

e. Creates a safe environment through various safety practices, including, but not limited to:

- Fall precaution

- Restraint management

- Patient I.D.

- Unit/Department specific policies

f. Respects patient/guests personal property.

g. Adheres to hospital wide and department-specific safety regulations, including, but not limited to:

- Fire and tornado

- Environmental safety

h. Performs equipment safety checks.

i. Complies with patients' rights/regulations.

 

Coordination of Services

a. Functions as a Preceptor.

b. Coordinates workflow by communicating to appropriate personnel in a timely manner.

c. Demonstrates ability to direct and/or assist with the work activities of department consistent with patient needs and staff capabilities.

d. Identifies and resolves problems related to patient, families, physicians, staff, and equipment.

e. Participates in quality improvement activities that ensure and enhance quality of patient care and/or reporting mechanisms.

f. Transcribes physicians orders accurately, seeking clarification as necessary.

 

Primary Aspects

a. Demonstrates proper time management skills and priority setting.

b. Demonstrates ability to assess and identify actual physical, psychosocial and spiritual needs of patient and families, documenting such in the medical record.

c. Initiates, updates and maintains care path/protocols in timely manner to reflect changing needs of patients and families.

d. Implements appropriate respiratory care interventions in routine situations.

e. Documents the evaluation of the effectiveness of therapy in relation to patient goals.

f. Demonstrates appropriate knowledge base related to medications and adheres to hospital policies regarding their administration.

g. Assures all patient charges/credits are entered appropriately.

h. Documentation is factual, accurate, organized, complete, current, and confidential.

i. Identifies patient education needs and utilizes appropriate resources to meet those needs, documenting patient/S.O. response to teaching.

j. Demonstrates flexibility regarding workload, assignments and change.

k. Demonstrates competence in assisting physician with diagnostic and therapuetic interventions.

l. Observes Medical Center/departmental policies and operational guidelines, including, but not limited to:

- Attendance

- Tardiness

 

Communication Management

a. Communicates patient goals, objectives and changes in status to other health care team members and utilizes input to revise care plan for optimum patient benefit.

b. Shift report is factual, accurate, organized, complete, current, and confidential.

c. Makes independent decisions in routine and complex situations and informs appropriate persons of actions and results.

 

Technology

a. Demonstrates competence in initiating and maintaining use of routine equipment and procedures.

b. Carries out other respiratory responsibilities, including, but not limited to:

- Changing equipment

- Processing equipment

- Stocking supplies

- O2 Tank replacement

c. Performs technical skills relative to area of respiratory practice.

d. Assists in evaluation of new products, equipment, policies, procedures and standards.


Qualifications:

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Succesful completion of program approved by National Board for Respiratory Care.

  • Licensure: Licensed with Missouri Board for Respiratory Care.

  • Experience: Minimum 1 year experience required.

  • Certification/Registration: Registered as a therapist by the National Board of Respiratory Care.

  • Other skills & knowledge: BLS/CPR through an American Heart Association approved course
