Job Description
Job Title: Retail Store Cashier
Normally Reports to: Store Manager
Job Objective: Every full or part-time sales associate is responsible for the proper and efficient operation of his or her shift, within company policy, in such a manner as to ensure that the shift contributes to the increase profitability of the store.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: In addition to the essential job functions described below, all associates will perform duties requested by management. Assigned responsibilities and duties may vary based upon location size and operation.
General Management
- Observes shift operation hours at all times, as assigned by the Store Manager
- Performs specific task assigned by Store Manager
- Assist the Store Manager in seeing that the store maintains a store-inspection grade of at least 90% on the store-inspection report
- Gives all customers prompt and courteous service
- Follows the work schedule as posted, unless a change in schedule is arranged with Store Manager
- Attend store meetings
- Stays familiar with company price book, operations manual, and bulletins
- Ensures Store Manager is made aware of all sales, cash, or operation discrepancies.
- Operates shift within company guidelines to achieve sales and profit
- Operate the register and related business machines
- Accurate handling of cash and reporting
- Check in vendors and gas deliveries
- Stock warehouse orders
Bookkeeping
- Prepare a shift-change report at the completion of shift in accordance with company guidelines
- Notifies Store Manager of any discrepancies in the operation results on the shift report, cash over, or shift conditions in excess or $5.00 within 24 hours
- Assures proper sale and accounting for lottery tickets during shift, as described in the operations manual
- Rings all sales as per training
- Accurately posts markups and markdowns, store use of merchandise, and bad-merchandise write-off’s, within the established guidelines
- Counts the cigarette inventory on every shift, including counting and calculating.
Personnel
- Advise Store Manager of any personnel situations or policy violations having an adverse effect on store operating performance
Security
- Shares the responsibility for controlling the inventory on the shift or in the store
- Follows company policy with regard to excessive cash in registers, change box, and safe security, as directed by Store Manager
- Completes a shift-balance report at the end of the shift, as directed by Store Manager
- Follows correct vendor check-in procedures as defined in the operations manual and as directed by Store Manager
- Protects all company assets at all times
Merchandising
- Keeps coolers, drink boxes, store shelves, and displays fully stocked and fronted at all times
- Properly cleans and maintains equipment and readies high-margin products such as coffee, fountain drinks, etc., as directed by Store Manager
- Uses correct pricing as listed in the price book or grocery catalog for all merchandise
- Use plus-selling techniques as directed by Store Manager
Maintenance
- Keeps store floors clean at all times (sweeping and mopping), with specific responsibility being assigned by the Store Manager
- Checks refrigeration equipment for proper performance, a minimum of one time per shift
- Cleans windows, floors, shelving, counters, and gas pumps to ensure they remain clean at all times
- Pick up trash and empty trash cans
- Check pump paper
- Follows the weekly maintenance schedule as assigned by Store Manager
- Immediately advises Store Manager of any maintenance problems
- Reading the TLM & manually checking the fuel inventory tanks using a stick, should the TLM become inoperable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Be able to read, understand, and write the English language at a high school level, including the ability to hear spoken work
- Be able to perform arithmetical calculations at the eight-grade level in order to be able to make change, complete shift reports, and account for numbers of a variety of products during vendor check-in
- Have sufficient visual acuity to check identification.
- Be able to read and understand instructions for operating electronic cash registers and other equipment
- Be able to lift 50 pounds, carrying cases of milk cartons, soft drinks, and juices
- Be able to physically stock shelves and coolers
- Be able to react to a fire by lifting a fire extinguisher weighing 20 pounds and moving it to the fire area
- Be able to tolerate exposure to gasoline fumes and cleaning products
- Be able to sweep and mop floors, dust shelves, and lift and carry out trash containers and place in an outside bin
- Be able to clean the parking lot and grounds surrounding the convenience store
- Be able to enter and work in a cooler at a temperature of 30 degrees and a freezer as low as 0 degrees up to 30 minutes at a time
- Be able to change out reader board messages and gas prices on the price signs and marquees

- Lifting small weighed objects constantly; 20 pound objects frequently and 20-50 pound objects occasionally
- Climbing ladders, stairs and ramps
- Balancing, pushing and pulling
- Crouching, kneeling, reaching and grasping objects
- Walking: move about inside the office and/or branch facilities as well as airport/travel needs
- Sit/Stand: Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50 percent of the time
- Capable of traveling as required
Attendance Requirements: Attendance on a regular, consistent basis is mandatory, including arriving at the time as scheduled
