Primary Purpose

Operates ultrasound equipment used to produce quality routine to diagnostic scans to ensure optimal patient care.

Minimum Specifications

Education

Graduate from an accredited sonography program.

Experience

- Sonographers working in Ultrasound must have a minimum of five years of sonography experience.

- Sonographers working in Women's Health must achieve six different items from the List of Activities to promote to level III or register in Fetal Echocardiography from the ARDMS.

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

- Education completed in sonography in another country with current abdomen credential from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers (ARDMS) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists

- Sonography (ARRT(S)) and hospital sonography experience For Obstetrics and Gynecology: Graduation from a local sonography program that is may not yet be accredited with JRCDMS or CAAHEP, but CAAHEP but has a clinical relationship with Parkland and has completed clinical rotation in a Parkland Ultrasound Department.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Sonographers working in Ultrasound must be registered in the subspecialty of the abdomen [by ARDMS (RDMS (AB)) or ARRT (S)] and vascular sonography [by ARDMS RVT or CCI-RVS] as a condition of hire.

- Sonographers working in Women's Health must be registered as a Sonographer by the ARDMS in the (OB/)GYN subspecialty within 12 months of the hire date.

- Sonographers working in Mammography must be registered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) in the subspecialty of breast ultrasound (RDMS (BR)) as a condition of hire.

- Must have a current Healthcare Provider CPR course completion card prior to hire and/or placement in job from one of the following:

• American Heart Association
• American Red Cross Rescuer
• Military Training Network.

Skills or Special

- Abilities Must be able to operate various types of ultrasound equipment used in performing procedures.

- Must be able to communicate effectively; written and verbally.

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of both normal and abnormal anatomy.

- Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient-valued behaviors.

- Must be able to utilize and navigate applicable computer systems in order to complete workflows.

Responsibilities

- Operate ultrasound equipment used to produce general diagnostic scans to ensure optimal patient care.

- Determines equipment and supply needs in advance for general diagnostic scans, ensuring patient safety and scan efficiency.

- May participate in complex scans and invasive procedures in order to meet vascular credential requirements and career development activities.

- Evaluates and verify images meet Ultrasound, VSL, or Mammography quality standards and established imaging protocols.

- Follows department protocols for image acquisition, labeling, documentation, and image presentation in PACS.

- Identifies and distinguishes between normal and abnormal anatomy relevant to imaging sub-specialty and documents in images and electronic health records per protocol.

- Maintains required quality standards through the use of Peer View and other department metrics reported on a regular basis.

- Participates in image review and feedback sessions with physicians, technologists, and supervisors.

- Observes patients during the scan to ensure their safety and well-being. Able to assess and respond to urgent and emergent patient events and demonstrates the ability to obtain the appropriate level of emergency assistance.

- Ensures the accuracy of all data entered into the patient record such as arrival, beginning and end exam information.

- Completes other computerized data entry and charging tasks with correct data and/or charge entry to ensure the accuracy of patient records and charges.

- May access and handle selected medications and contrast media within the scope of practice and with supervision and guidance of a Sr. sonographer and/or provider.

- Maintains and performs basic troubleshooting of ultrasound equipment and informs supervisor as needed to ensure equipment is operable and safe.

- Ensures broken equipment is taken out of service. Inspects, cleans, and prepares exam rooms after each patient to ensure the efficiency of patient flow within the area.

- Follows infection prevention practices and completes any logs or documentation as required. Participates in Environment of Care (EOC) rounds and inspection readiness activities.

- Actively participates in the training of sonography or medical students, residents of fellows on clinical rotation within the department.

- Maintains positive working relationships using PHHS's Colleague Behavior guidelines.

- Serves as a resource person for physicians, sonographers, students, and patients to ensure an efficient flow of patient information and care. Assists in the department orientation and onboarding of new sonographers, APP staff, and resident or fellow physicians.

- Follows departmental and organizational behavioral expectations and receives no written corrective actions within the evaluation period - or shows significant improvement in behavior since the corrective action occurred. Attends six or more department meetings or department-sponsored continuing education sessions (per year if applicable).

- This provision may be waived at the manager's discretion due to shift or emergency circumstances.

- Provides evaluation-related documentation 45 days prior to the evaluation, or on request, to ensure department management has adequate supporting documents necessary for performance evaluation.
