Structural Designer - Structural Designer Sr

Position Description:
Each of the positions in the Structural Designer job family is responsible for performing daily work activities with general supervision. Work activities and responsibilities include supporting the production of civil/structural construction drawings using computer aided drafting. 

The activities that will be performed include, but are not limited to:
  1. Associated clerical work to properly manage and document the work activities performed, as per AEP requirements for the position.
  2. Assist responsible engineer with development of documentation to support project decision making.
  3. Assist and prepare layouts and detailed design drawings.
  4. Create bills of material and submit requisitions for the procurement of the project materials.
  5. Prepare material take-off quantities.
  6. Develop concepts and review subcontractor structural designs.
  7. Coordinate information and design across a multi-disciplinary team to ensure deliverables are           compliant with project expectations. 
  8. Provide support to construction and professional field service personnel to resolve issues and concerns during the construction phase of projects.
  9. Collaborate with various departments during the course of the project.
  10. Generate steel structure detail drawings for fabrication.
  11. Generate concrete foundation detail drawings.
  12. Perform mathematical calculations required to accomplish assigned work.
These might include:
Calculations for sizing and design of oil containment systems.
Calculations for determining material quantities for specified depths of drilled pier foundations.
Calculations for determining B/M item weights and required copes and member lengths for steel detailing.
Center of gravity location on shippable steel members.
  1. Proficiency in the use of computer aided design software (Microstation, AutoCAD).
  2. Proficiency in the use of Structural design software preferred.

Requirements

Basic Qualifications for Designer:

Education:
Associate degree in applied science (AAS) drafting and computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology, with one to two years of relevant equivalent experience.

Work: 
Equivalent experience without AAS degree - high school graduate and 6 years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.

Additional Requirements:
Must be available to work occasional overtime as required to meet project deadlines.
Travel requirements are expected < 10 % of the time
Physical demand level is Sedentary

Must be familiar with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and have the ability to distinguish colors. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license. Must meet all vehicle operation requirements as designated by federal and/or state law. This position may require shift work or overtime. Occasional overnight travel to and work within a substation or power plant environment in obedience to all safety regulations and use of personal protection equipment.

Basic Qualifications for Designer Sr :

Education:
Associate degree in applied science (AAS) in drafting and computer aided design (CAD) or in civil, electrical or mechanical engineering technology and 4 years of equivalent experience.

Experience:
Without AAS degree - high school graduate and 8 years of experience in electric utility and/or related industrial drafting and/or computer aided drafting work.

Must be proficient in working with conventional drafting symbols and drafting methods and have the ability to distinguish colors. Note: Some noted requirements are mutually exclusive with regard to each specific discipline. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle and possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
