Job Description

POSITION PURPOSE:

The RN in Surgical and Outpatient Services functions under the direct supervision of the OR Supervisor and Surgical Physicians. The RN is required to coordinate the intra-operative care of the patient and delegate duties appropriately. The RN may be required to function in the role of Surgical Scrub Nurse, PACU Nurse, Circulating RN, Pre-operative Services, Surgical Outpatient RN or perform duties in Central Sterile/Processing as needed.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduate of an approved school of nursing.                                                                                                            

 Experience: Desirable characteristic includes at least one year Nursing Experience and previous Peri-operative or PACU experience.      

 Licenses/Certificates:   Current Alabama License.  ACLS certification desired within 6 months. BLS certified required within 30 days of hire..  

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Must demonstrate a comprehensive and current knowledge of nursing theory and a thorough knowledge of and ability to implement aseptic technique.
2. Must demonstrate the ability to obtain a complete nursing assessment and recognize data that may conflict with the plan of care and whom to report the information.
3. Must understand anesthetic procedures and medications. 
4. Have knowledge of anatomy and develop a plan of care that is age appropriate.
5. Participate in patient care, assist in pre/post-operative patient assessments and teaching.
6. Is responsible to provide a cooperative working relationship between team members, surgeons, and all other departments interacting with the surgical unit.
7. May be expected to take OR call as needed.
