Job Summary

Performs circulating and/or scrub nurse services requiring substantial specialized knowledge, judgment and skill based upon the biological, physiological, behavioral and social sciences. To learn more about Porter Medical Center's Surgical Services, please go to:

Job Responsibilities

  • Determines daily work assignments as listed on the O.R. assignment sheet.
  • May be designated as Daily Charge Nurse. 
  • Reviews the caseload of the room assigned. 
  • Assembles x-rays, records and equipment needed for the days case load. 
  • Identifies the patient on arrival to O.R.  Assists with positioning the patient for the procedure on the table. 
  • Assures patient security with the safety strap. 
  • Assists anesthesia personnel as needed. 
  • Does preop and intraop counts of instruments, sponges and needles with the scrub personnel. 
  • Accompanies the patient to P.A.C.U. and gives nurse to nurse report after anesthesia completes their report. 
  • Assists P.A.C.U. nurse to settle the patient as necessary. 
  • Completes operating room Activity & Accountability record. 
  • Completes the O.R. charges for the procedure. 
  • Handles, preserves tissue specimens and sends them to Lab.  
  • Direct and assist with cleaning the operating room after the procedure. 
  • Assure that O.R. is ready for the next procedure
  • Other duties as assigned by the department manager. 


Job Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited nursing education program. 
  • Current licensure with the Vermont State Board of Nursing. 
  • Demonstrates competence as a licensed professional. 
  • Maintains professional growth and development to keep abreast of the field. 
  • Participation in professional organizations desirable.
