Role Summary/Purpose:

Synchrony is on a multi-year journey of building a best-in-class API product suite, allowing partners, 3rd parties, and Synchrony owned applications to leverage enterprise API capabilities regardless of application context, line of business, or application channel. The fundamental set of these APIs has been deployed, a developer portal has been built for documentation and self-consumption, and a developer ecosystem has been created around the API product vision.

We are looking for someone who is passionate about technology best practices, API design and development, and can combine their technology expertise with a product lens to create a long-term vision for the Synchrony API platform.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide guidance for API development agile teams in their day to day of building APIs inclusive of

    • Aiding in the creation and review of API specifications

    • Aligning agile product needs to the overall enterprise API vision

    • Assisting with agile architects to create best in class services leveraging enterprise capabilities & infrastructure

  • Partner with Product Owners to develop enterprise API product roadmaps

  • Be a contributing member of the enterprise API advisory board, inclusive of creating standards & guidance documents

  • Work with the API gateway and developer portal agile teams to help define product requirements based on the enterprise API product vision

This position is remote, where you have the option to work from home. On occasion we may request for you to commute to our nearest office for in person engagement activities such as team meetings, training and culture events. Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership and expertise on the API gateway platform working closely with the Agile Development teams

  • Participate in defining and execute on platform roadmaps for the API gateway

  • Provide architectural guidance, design, and direction to API gateway engineers and API COE

  • Develop strategic plans on evolving Synchrony’s API ecosystem to continue to drive success in the marketplace

  • Mentor and influence stakeholders to ensure engineering excellence

  • Participate in agile team planning and retrospectives

  • Lead and manage engineers in a geographically distributed work environment

  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Must have a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

  • 3+ years as an API or Microservice Engineer, systems architect, or technical product owner

  • 3+ years leading employee and contractor teams, people management, and talent development

  • Experience with Customer facing digital solutions

  • Architectural expertise of API development in a Microservice/EDA environment

  • Ability to read, write, and provide guidance on JSON/YAML API specifications leveraging REST fundamentals

  • Experience with apigee, mulesoft, or other API gateway technologies

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in the fintech Industry as it relates to consumer financing

  • Willingness to engage across suite of technologies and business capabilities

  • Boundaryless thinking and willing to engage in engineering challenges wherever they present themselves

  • Deep experience in service-oriented architecture

  • Critical thinking and creativity

  • Excellent communications skills, ability to explain, influence and negotiate

  • Strong communications and relationship building skills

  • Experience with Agile methodology

  • Capable of working in Java Spring, and NodeJS

  • Strong attention to detail and a keen eye for aesthetics

  • Advocate for technology best practices

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older
  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process
  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.
  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles.  Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles.  Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 24 months’ time in position before they can post.  All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
