PRIMARY PURPOSE

Completes abstracts and provides support of cancer registry operations at Parkland to maintain accreditation and compliance with program standards.

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Education

- None.

Experience

- Must have five (5) years of registry experience.

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

- May have an equivalent combination of education and/or experience in lieu of specific education and/or experience as stated above.

Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification is required.

Skills or Special Abilities

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of anatomy and physiology concepts.

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology.

- Must be able to interact well with physicians and other hospital staff on a daily basis.

- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally.

- Must be able to function with minimal supervision.

- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of computers, word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.

- Must have knowledge of all registry operations.

- Must be knowledgeable of cancer site specific disease management standards of care.

- Must understand American College of Surgeons (ACos) Cancer Program Standards and application to registry operations.

- Must be able to generate reports to evaluate database concerns.

- Must be fully competent in all basic registry operations.

Responsibilities

Cancer Registry

- Performs review of all patient access points to Parkland in case finding efforts to identify new registry patients.

- Performs accurate abstracting to registry computer database for all reportable cases with pertinent and complete codes and/or data according to data reporting standards and procedures, as well as state and facility requirements.

- Assists with updates and pertinent follow-up data including disease status, recurrence information, subsequent treatment, and death information on all cases.

- Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer (internal as well as external) satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals and mission of the Parkland.

- Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in registry by attending seminars and workshops, reading professional journals, and integrating this knowledge as appropriate into the job.

- Processes all data requests and prepares appropriate reports for internal and external customers.

- Assists department manager with administrative tasks and other duties as assigned.

Job Accountabilities

1. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.

3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
