Role Summary/Purpose:

As a Virtualization Reliability Engineer, you will work on the firm’s VMWare Infrastructure, leveraging system engineering and troubleshooting expertise to drive production uptime, stability, and resiliency. The Reliability Engineer will have a mindset to maximize system availability through both proactive and reactive means: building robust technical support and automation to eliminate or minimize incidents, as well as investigate and resolve issues in response to live incidents.  The individual in this role will be a technical leader with the ability identify and drive improvements.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • The primary responsibilities include driving the observability, reliability, availability, performance, capacity planning, and operational support for Synchrony’s VMWare/VSphere environment. You will be expected to leverage automation and orchestration tooling, along with infrastructure-as-code patterns to support your endeavors

  • Participate in an agile team to include reliability features in all phases of the Agile development life cycle through SAFe

  • Design and build new infrastructure services with performance, availability, and scalability in mind.

  • Capacity Planning and Capacity Management for Synchrony’s private cloud infrastructure

  • Provide Operational Oversight of the managed services provider for the firm’s VMware infrastructure

  • Drive root cause analyses, incident reports and lead direction in problem resolution

  • Proactively identify and analyze production defects, troubleshoot systems, identify root cause, and implement fixes

  • Participate in an off-hours on-call rotation, and perform periodic off-hours work during maintenance windows

  • Participate in change planning and reviews to identify risks to critical applications, then collaborate with application and infrastructure teams to mitigate the risk

  • Create and update architectural diagrams and document processes/procedures

  • Increase and improve system observability to better detect availability and performance anomalies: Drive Event Correlation, Anomaly Identification, Predictive Monitoring, Eliminate “Blind Spots”

  • Develop processes for routine analysis of log, monitoring, and alerting systems to ensure a healthy “factory floor”

  • Improve operational efficiency and reliability through automation

  • Perform other duties and/or special projects as assigned

Qualifications/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum 7 years of experience with infrastructure design and operations OR, in lieu of degree, High School Diploma/GED 7 years of experience with infrastructure design and operations.

  • 7+ years of managing VMware infrastructure

  • 7+ years of experience managing servers in a virtualized or cloud environment

  • Diverse experience in 24/7 operational environments

  • Experience and knowledge of cloud management, deployment, and distributed systems architecture

  • Knowledge of Linux, VMWare, security, administration, performance monitoring/tuning, troubleshooting, and production operations

  • System Observability experience (vRops, CloudWatch, PagerDuty, Datadog, NewRelic, etc)

  • Highly-collaborative team player who can build strong relationships at all levels of the technology and business organizations

  • Experience using vRops and vRNI for production support

  • Excellence in technical communication with technical and non-technical peers

  • Desire to work in a dynamic, fast paced environment

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to influence clients, team members, management and external groups

  • Competency in data center storage and networking concept

  • Experience with Powershell scripting and driving automation in the environment 

  • Have an urge to document all the things so you don't need to learn the same thing twice

  • Have an enthusiastic, go-for-it attitude. When you see something broken, you can't help but fix it!!

  • Deep understanding of VMware/VSphere and system administration at large-scale

  • Strong experience with VMWARE suite of products focusing on NSX-V/T, ESXi and Integrations with Tanzu 

  • Strong organizational skills with high attention to detail and the able to work independently with minimal supervision

Grade/Level: 11

The salary range for this position is 85,000.00 - 170,000.00 USD Annual

Salaries are adjusted according to market in CA and Metro NY and some positions are bonus eligible.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • You must be 18 years or older

  • You must have a high school diploma or equivalent

  • You must be willing to take a drug test, submit to a background investigation and submit fingerprints as part of the onboarding process

  • You must be able to satisfy the requirements of Section 19 of the Federal Deposit Insurance Act.

  • New hires (Level 4-7) must have 9 months of continuous service with the company before they are eligible to post on other roles.  Once this new hire time in position requirement is met, the associate will have a minimum 6 months’ time in position before they can post for future non-exempt roles.  Employees, level 8 or greater, must have at least 24 months’ time in position before they can post.  All internal employees must consistently meet performance expectations and have approval from your manager to post (or the approval of your manager and HR if you don’t meet the time in position or performance expectations).
