Primary Purpose

Responsible for high quality, effective management of patients including accurate data collection and use of clinical practice guidelines, timely and thorough communication with nurses, paramedics, physicians, field and hospital personnel to ensure safe and effective services.

Education

•Must be a graduate of an EMT-Paramedic program.

Experience

•Must have two years of experience in a pre-hospital and/or emergency care services environment.

•Prefer experience in a BioTel agency or air-medical agency

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

•None

Certification/Registration/Licensure

•Must have current EMT-Paramedic certification from the Texas Department of Health.

•Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from one of the following:

-American Heart Association

-American Red Cross Rescuer

-Military Training Network.

-Required Tests for Placement

Skills or Special Abilities

•Must be able to develop and maintain knowledge of BioTel Medical Control System, all agencies under the BioTel Medical Control System, Trauma Protocols, EMS Protocols, and BioTel clinical practice guidelines.

•Must be able to demonstrate effective interpersonal skills and possess good oral and written communication skills.

•Must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and all levels of pre-hospital, hospital, and medical staff.

•Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of standard pre-hospital procedures and techniques and appropriate regulatory guidelines.

•Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/valued behaviors and be capable of handling complex clinical care utilizing independent judgement.

•Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skill in the use of the BioTel equipment system.

Responsibilities

1.Responsible for an accurate and timely response to incoming calls from field paramedics using the Biotel system. Prioritizes calls, collects patient data, documents condition, health history, ordered treatment and medications, analyzes information and directs field paramedic activities using knowledge of Medical Control, EMS protocols and ensures that the patient's condition is rapidly assessed and properly managed.

2.Ensures that patient transport management is clear and coordinated with appropriate healthcare personnel. Consults with the BioTel physicians as needed. Communicates with EMS providers and necessary allied healthcare providers as to critical patients' arrival. Notifies receiving hospitals of patient's status and estimated time of arrival and documents all communications.

3.Develops and maintains knowledge base regarding medical control and the role of fire department emergency medical services in the BioTel System. Maintains knowledge and awareness of current changes regarding Trauma Protocols, EMS Protocols, BioTel Clinical Practice Guidelines, Parkland policies and procedures, and patient transport/treatment laws and guidelines that may impact EMS. Monitors pre-hospital activities to ensure that they comply with UT/BioTel EMS system standards. Follows effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.Clarifies protocols and educates coworkers and allied health personnel as needed regarding Medical Control and pre- hospital activities.

4.Documents patient information to ensure precise accounting of patient’s condition and treatment. Responsible for entering documents into BioTel database accurately and efficiently.

5.Maintains positive working relationships with field paramedics, area hospitals, allied health personnel, police agencies, and fire departments to ensure a teamwork approach to the community’s emergency medical needs.

6.Participates in department’s quality management and research project to improve awareness of quality care in the pre-hospital setting.

7.Accepts additional shifts to meet staffing conditions, works assigned schedules and ensures that cancelled shifts are covered appropriately to support compliance with terms and standards of the BioTel contract.

8.Keeps shift areas properly stocked and prepared for oncoming shifts, and sets priorities to ensure that tasks are completed in a timely and productive manner.

Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
