About the Role

The Timing and Frequency division at Trimble develops embedded devices that provide high precision timing signals for wireline and wireless networks. We provide industry leading solutions using our products based on GNSS, PTP, NTP and other state-of-the-art protocols and technologies. We are currently working on the next generation of products to address the needs of the evolving 5G standards and industry adoption of new wireless network technologies.  We are currently looking for a highly skilled Engineering Director (Firmware) to join our team.

Reporting to the division General Manager, the Engineering Director is responsible for execution of product development for the division and leadership for the R&D team. Must provide strong people and technical leadership for the engineering team; to create an environment with the appropriate balance of flexibility and process.

 

Measures of Success

  • Creates an environment that encourages collaboration, fosters innovation, and stimulates high performance in the engineering team.

  • Effectively interacts with all functional areas as well as with customers, suppliers, field sales, CMs, and division management.

  • Manages engineering resources to meet both product development schedules and customer/marketing requirements, including creating specifications addressing the relevant requirements documents.

  • Successfully balances new product development and sustaining product projects competing for engineering resources.

  • Maintains high quality standards in a dynamic environment.

  • Provides effective leadership: challenges employees to be extraordinary, embraces ambiguity and complexity, and utilizes coaching as a way to grow and improve employee capabilities.

 

Skills & Experience Required

  • Strong analytical skills, and clear communication skills (both verbal and written), as interactions may involve direct communication with external customers and vendors.

  • Engineering management experience, building, leading and motivating a team of hardware and firmware/software engineers.

  • Experience working through complex technical issues with major customers and suppliers.

  • Degree(s) in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or related field, MS preferred

  • 7-10 years of experience working in a development team, including firmware and hardware interfacing. Experience with device drivers, software/hardware diagnostics and ability to read schematics. Programming experience in Firmware, C and C++

  • Knowledge of and experience with Ethernet, physical layer devices/transceivers and layer 2 networking/Ethernet switching

 

Other Valued Skills:

  • Track record managing development projects combining both innovation and tactical management.

  • Ability to improve/implement processes to facilitate product development process.

  • Familiarity with quality assurance processes.

  • Familiarity with GNSS, networking, cellular and/or spread-spectrum radio technologies and applications.

  • Experience with  Precision Timing Protocol (PTP) IEEE 1588
