Job Description

The Senior Crops Economist functions as a core member of the team to produce and publish quality analysis. The role will have a heavy focus on production of global crops, farmer cropping decision making, but will also be involved in price analysis of all major crop futures markets.

Duties & Accountabilities

The Senior Crops Economist works within the Crops Research Group. The responsibilities include:

Working as an integral part of the Area, Yield and Production team in forecasting farmers planting decisions, yields and production across the globe.

The Senior Crops Economist will also be responsible for building out and continually improving sound statistically based quantitative price analysis tools across all tradeable futures markets covered. Additionally, will be a critical link between the short-term forecasting team (0-12 months) and the long-term forecasting team (12 months and beyond).

Knowledge & Skills

  • Superior quantitative analytical skills
  • A passion for learning and intellectual curiosity.
  • A solid knowledge of commodity markets and how they operate.
  • An outstanding understanding of the economic theory and an ability to apply it to futures commodity markets.
  • Excellent MS Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint and Power BI skills.
  • A strong knowledge of advanced statistical packages (R, Python, Stata, Eviews, etc.)
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Willing and able to deal with client requests as they arise, and to travel as the job requires.
  • Self-motivated and ambitious, with good problem-solving skills.

Qualification & Experience

  • The person holding this position is required to have PhD in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or Statistics or an MS in those degrees with a work history that demonstrates outstanding quantitative skills.
  • A high degree of analytic ability with an ability to communicate the results in reports.
  • Experience conducting economic or market research.
  • Strong inter-personal and communication skills, and the ability to develop trust and respect from both colleagues as well as clients.

  • For work locations in the state of Colorado, the anticipated minimum base salary for this role would be $75,072. Compensation will be determined by the education, experience, knowledge, and abilities of the applicant.
